Birks and Arnison crag – 10th September 2013

My name’s Gina and I’m an obsessed Wainwright bagger. Friends warned me this would happen!

Another gorgeous evening, Gary and Steve turned up to join us to walk up Birks and Arnison Crag. It was lovely seeing Steve again as he’d had a twitter break and had been ages since we had last seen him.

We met at the school house in Patterdale. Free parking is always a good thing. Decided to walk up Birks first, it was a steady climb up and we were rewarded with amazing views of Ullswater on our rest stops.

The climb seemed to go on for ages and as with other walks, we were so busy talking that we missed the path. This meant we had to pick our way up a severely steep part of the hill till the summit was in sight! The wind had picked up and on the top nearly blew me off my feet! The good news was I got to wear my newly purchased Marmot fleece lined top!

The path to Arnison Crag was clearly marked out. This was a good thing after our previous boob.

It’s good getting the big ones out of the way first, as makes for an easier second part of the walk. It was an easy walk to our next summit. The wind had dropped. Cloud shrouded Helvellyn so didn’t have a good sunset.

Soon Arnison crag was in sight and number 97 was in the bag!

The sun was setting as we left Arnison Crag.

It was time to use my head torch for the first time. I felt like a proper walker albeit one that wears lipgloss! It was quite a gentle descent and soon the pub was in sight. A pint of Jennings Crag rat as our walkers reward in the Patterdale hotel. Then a short walk back to the car, say our goodbyes and head home.
