A slight mix up in flight times back from Ibiza meant we had a free day. So from my sun lounger I was planning a route! Yes I know I’m slightly obsessed. I decided we were going to do a final few in the Langdale area. The Langdales are my favourite part of the lakes. A text around and Gary said I’m up for that. So we met at 8.30 in the National Trust car park at Old Dungeon Ghyll.
It was a lovely day though there was a little bit of cloud which we hoped would burn off. But when you are greeted with this you know it’s going to be a good day.
The agenda today was Bowfell, Esk Pike, Great End and Rossett Pike. Rather than going up the Band, we decided to go up Hells Ghyll. What a lovely route up. Quite a moderate ascent and could feel how unfit I felt after not doing a lot for 10 days.
As we looked up towards Bowfell it was shrouded in cloud and was reminiscent to how it was back in March when I last climbed it. But as we passed the three tarns the cloud was moving and we got excited that we may be in for an inversion.
As we neared the top, it didn’t disappoint. Just stunning vistas opening up before our eyes.
The clouds were dancing in and out and whilst we could have spent ages just taking it in, there were mountains to climb.
Next was Esk Pike, it was a well defined path with little descent and ascent.
It was a similar walk over to Great End. We decided to leave our rucksacks and sprint up to the summit of Great End as we would be retracing our steps.
Great end done and the descent down taking in Rossett Pike the final summit of the day. The cloud was circling again. Past Angle Tarn before the short uphill divert up to Rossett Pike.
A bait stop on the top before the descent back to the car.
The descent down the Mickleden valley seemed relentless. The weather had been a real treat and felt my Spanish tanned skin getting weathered.
Soon the Old Dungeon was in sight and a walkers reward pint.
Another great day in the hills, another 3 ticked off bringing the total up to 196! Thanks for your company Gary and sorry for the photobomb haha!!
Great blog , fantastic photos , in my favourite part of the Lake District . David
