It was probably about 5 years after moving to the Lake District, that I bought my first pair of walking boots and discovered my love for the hills. My first boots were some lightweight Merrels. They were a lightweight summer boots and super comfy. I literally wore them to death, the sole given up the ghost on the way up to Easedale Tarn. Using a spare lace to temporarily mend.
I had also bought some winter boots, a pair of Scarpas. At the time I couldn’t believe how much I had spent on a pair of boots. They were heavy and took some getting used to. When my Merrells were no more I just started wearing those all the time.
Over the years, they have certainly done some miles. In 2012, when I decided to do the Wainwrights from scratch, the mileage increased dramatically. They are so incredibly comfy, like wearing your favourite slippers.
But that day came when the sole came away and I was faced with the dilemma of what to replace them with. I certainly got my monies worth out of them with their 20 year service.
I decided to go for another pair of scarpas. Thankfully in the sale and on their first outing, I’m pleased to report they are like their predecessor and are very comfy. First Wainwright done in them and look forward to the walking adventures in them. I wonder if I’ll get 20 years out of them??
